What’s changed?
- Renamed the “Extensions” preferences to “Plugins” (which is what they really will be).
- PowerPC users should be exempt from the endless authentication craziness (although the question remains as to how many people are actually getting full functionality if the dock code isn’t inserting properly). I’m not sure if anything will change for Intel users yet.
- There is a first sweep at integrated Ambient Light Sensor (ALS) switching. If your laptop has a backlit keyboard, you can try enabling this from the “Application Preferences”. Make sure you set the sensitivity accordingly (I recommend about 25% of the way along).
Known issues
- Some users are reporting that VirtueDesktops is continuously asking for admin permissions. I’m looking into this. In the meantime, please open a terminal window, and perform the following commands (assuming you placed VirtueDesktops in your /Applications folder):
cd /Applications
sudo chgrp procmod VirtueDesktops.app/Contents/MacOS/VirtueDesktops
sudo chmod g+s VirtueDesktops.app/Contents/MacOS/VirtueDesktops
- The ALS code is very young. Use with caution. In the next couple of releases, I’ll be disabling and hiding hardware functionality if it isn’t present on the current machine.
- The sensitivity slide from ALS is set to 1% by default. It needs to be set to around 25%.
- I’ve started documentation and help files for VirtueDesktops, but they are not included in this release
- Please use VirtueTrac to search for any issues you may be having, and to report any new problems.

ok, now all works.. but the name of desktops are all in the same desktop, they are overlapped.
Welcoming the addition of built in light sensor switching, but it’s way, way too sensitive even with the slider all the way to the left. I find it switching desktops magically in normal light situations without any movement over the light sensors whatsoever. Shadowbook doesn’t have this problem, but obviously requires three 10ghz core duos to run.
Hoping this will be fixed in later releases
Why don’t you guys add a plugin so that you can rename the names of desktops? I think it would be an awesome plugin!
Hello, just installed latest 10.4.8 beta and Virtue mouse switching is broken (first work, than not) and apps do not go to the proper dsktop.
..and now I find myself with only one desktop buhhh 8-/
any chance you could look into that?
Thank you, have a great day, keep up the great work!!!

I agree with the last poster’s complaint about the sensitivity of the ambient light sensor being too extreme. I’d also like to know why I’m still limited to only four desktops when the inspector has room for like 80. I suppose I can poke around Library and copy a desktop, and have it work, but a way through the GUI should be on your roadmap if it isn’t, and make it a top priority, 4 desktops is not enough.

and “Playing” as well… (SecondLife or WoW in a Window, anyone?)
Just outlining that it’s wholely possible to absolutely need six.
Same issue as highpass. I’m loving the latest version - thank you! But the light sensor is so sensitive it is just unusable.
I am having the known issue specified in known issues, VirtueDesktops is repeatedly asking for admin password. I have done the permission and group changes specified and it still repeatedly asks for admin permissions. I uninstalled it and deleted all loose files related to it, and installed various older versions and now they all do the same thing. I can’t get any version to work now.
With the latest release of parallel, the ability to change desktop is lost again
I’m new to VirtueDektops, but like it a lot. My complements to the authors. Now for some suggestions… what I would like to see is a way to have different sets of desktop icons for different desktops. Another nice feature would be activation of the frontmost window while changing desktops.
The chmod/chgrp trick isn’t working for me on a macbook:
550 % ll /MyApplications/utils/VirtueDesktops.app/Contents/MacOS/VirtueDesktops
-rwxrwsr-x 1 ryan procmod 426140 Sep 22 00:37 /MyApplications/utils/VirtueDesktops.app/Contents/MacOS/VirtueDesktops*
I’m still getting the persistent auth stuff. Lemme know if you want a backtrace or somethin’
