VirtueDesktops 0.53r204

18 08 2006

What’s changed?

  • This is a quick release to repair your ability to rename desktops from the desktop inspector view.
  • The application inspector only crashes VirtueDesktops under an unnamed future Apple operating system, so it’s nothing for you guys to worry about.

Known issues

  • Auto-updating is still broken. I believe the problem lies with Wordpress, so if anyone is using Sparkle successfully with Wordpress, please drop me a line
  • I’ve started documentation and help files for VirtueDesktops, but they are not included in this release
  • Please use VirtueTrac to search for any issues you may be having, and to report any new problems.

VirtueDesktops 0.53r198

17 08 2006

What’s changed?

  • This is the next minor release of VirtueDesktops (0.53)
  • Localisations should all be in place for the languages I have received so far (English, French, German, Italian and Russian)
  • There are some minor user-interface changes I’m playing with. Nothing is set in stone, but the preferences and inspectors are long overdue for an overhaul
  • Some rationalisation of the bindings. Broken settings like the motion sensor preference should now work just fine
  • I have combined all of the disparate Xcode projects into one main project — this will make debugging and further development much, much easier (and should allow me to take on contributors)
  • Lots of fixes — this is a big release

Known issues

  • You can’t change the names of desktops in this release using the desktop inspector (which is the only way to do it). This will be fixed shortly
  • The Application inspector appears to crash VirtueDesktops - again - a fix will be out very shortly

What Leopard’s Spaces means for VirtueDesktops future

12 08 2006

Hey guys, I’ve had a number of people asking me what impact the Apple’s Spaces announcement at WWDC this year is going to have on VirtueDesktops. Basically, for the near future — not much. Leopard is not due out until sometime in Spring, 2007 - that’s likely to be well over a year from now, and I for one am still going to use virtual desktops in that time. I have a semi-major update to the source tree coming in the next week or so based upon a whole slew of fixes and advice I received from friends and peers at the conference this year, including a big one: VirtueDesktops is now a single Xcode project (yes, you heard me right - mere mortals should now be able to compile and contribute to the VirtueDesktops codebase). Changing the codebase in the manner I have means that it’s time to tag the current, broken tree and push my new work into trunk.

Beyond the release of Leopard, I’m not really sure what I intend to do - everyone I ran into at WWDC asked me my plans. I can’t say very much about the technical side of things (everything except the Keynote at WWDC is covered by a non-disclosure agreement), but it appears from an early glance that there may still be a place for a tool like VirtueDesktops.

Personally, having used Apple’s Spaces, I am very impressed - it is very well implemented, addresses many of the current usability issues that seem inherent to existing desktop management tools and it looks slick to boot :)
