VirtueDesktops 0.54 Beta 5

13 06 2007

I am not picking up development of VirtueDesktops again, but there were a couple of really good patches submitted that address serious crashes. If you have any issues with this release, please understand it is wholly unsupported.

Always remember to back-up your VirtueDesktops preferences before running any beta version.

All work done in this beta was done by Florent Bruneau.

Changes

  • Fixes to localisation;
  • Miscellaneous fixes for stability;

Known issues

  • There is a massive memory leak in this build that builds up over time. Use an earlier beta if you don’t need the localisation provided by this build;

Ja.

Probably would be best to just patch it when bugs arise and let it fade with Tiger and below into obsolescence.

I’m seeing some interesting problems with beta5..
Namely a huge memory leak.. I came in this am to find that it has consumed nearly 1.2 Gig of memory!

Also, the “Display Window Control” hotkey seems to bring up the controls for the BACKmost window, instead of the frontmost!

I realize you’re no longer supporting this… maybe can you pass these issues on to Florent Bruneau?

I’m happy to help in debugging and such, if you let me know what I can do to help.

Ive been using this app for a long time.. and love it… but the last few betas (3 4 and 5) have all had issues that made it sort of unusable to me… so I have switched back to beta 2, which works fine for me, but just crashes occasionally.. and harmlessly.

Running 10.4.11 on a 2.2.66 Ghz Dual Core Xeon with 2Gb.

Therr thing:
If I have two or more Applications open on one desktop, and i click in the following order:
App1->App2->App3->Finder->App3, Instead of getting App3 as it is on the top of the pile, I get App1, which is on the bottom of the pile.

if say I have two windows of the same app open, and I accidentally send it to a different desktop, going to that desktop and clicking on i brings me to the desktop with the rest of the windows

If I send windows from one desktop to another, it will first send the selected window, then it it is pretty much random after that.

Hey,

Please don’t stop development of virtuedesktops. Leopard’s spaces don’t have nearly the flexibility or functionality of virtue :(

Note to Florent:

I too have a massive Virtue virtual disk file: 2.03 GB and climbing.

Powermac G5 1.6 MHz uni, 2 GB RAM, OS X 10.4.11, ATI Radeon 9600/256 MB, various Firewire and Sata-II external discs, Epson AcuLaser C900 (a.k.a. “The Boat Anchor”).

This is a bug-ridden piece of shit that leaks memory like there’s no tomorrow. Calling it beta is pretentious. I guess the developer is clueless that’s why he stopped, not because Leopard.

Not an entirely inaccurate assessment of things… Virtue does leak memory like a sieve in this build.

Rather than calling me out, prove me wrong - Virtue is open source. If you care enough to troll with a comment like that, put your talent where your mouth is and fix the memory leaks. I know they’re there, and I’ve made my choice not to continue developing Virtue - it wouldn’t take too much effort for someone with some basic cocoa/carbon development experience to fix the leaks.

I’m happy to provide the hosting and subversion repository for anyone who wants to pick this project up, or to push the whole lot back to Sourceforge or Google Code. Contact me privately and without the profanity if you’re interested.

Please, somebody, bring this app back from the dead. Spaces is total junk and doesn’t work. VirtueDesktops worked great and I would love to be able to replace Spaces.

Tony Arnold (08:11:58) :

@Phill: in what sense does Spaces not work? I’m genuinely interested, as I haven’t had too many problems with it that I didn’t already have with VirtueDesktops. Also, you do realise they’re both doing pretty much identical work right? They call exactly the same methods from CGS*, and manage windows/spaces fairly identically.

john_q: I know there is a leak in the beta5, and I know there are other bugs (the most annoying one is that Virtue lost consistency after a long uptime, don’t know why).

I’m sorry having no time to fix these bugs, but if you can confirm the leak has been introduced by the beta5, it would be easy to review the corresponding patches and find the bug.

I agree that VD is way better than spaces. I would be willing to pay $30 for a non-leaking, Leopard compatible v1.0

I really hope too that someone will pick up VD development. I’ve became dependent on multiple desktops for about 10 years now when I moved to Linux. VD did it’s job quite fine but Spaces is essentially worthless. It switches when I didn’t ask. The keyboard shortcuts aren’t configurable. I lose my windows all the time. For me it’s an absolute productivity killer.

I’ve been trying some of the hacks to make VD work on Leopard. I discovered that v0.53 r241 works. It looks like you have to click ignore on the first screen. I’ve used it for a day now. It’s very instable, but despite of that I’m quite happy using it. Hope it proves to be usable enough.

I too am looking to replace Spaces. It is useless for me. It does not create a virtual desktop at all, it just moves windows that are already open around. This is great if you like to open 30 windows at once, but not what I was looking for.

A virtual desktop is just that. You should be able to switch desktops! What is lacking is that we need a way for everything on the desktop to change - icons, folders, perhaps that background, etc… not just the windows that are open.

This is must more useful, as you can assign each desktop for different functions - writing, photo editing, etc…

Hope this makes a little sense… and I really hope someone could fix this for leopard soon! I wish I knew anything about coding…

thanks to everything that is still working on the project!

(sigh) Still no Leopard.
