Beta version of VirtueDesktops available to (not so) adventurous souls

15 12 2006

I don’t normally hold off on pushing builds via auto-update, but I want to make sure I take care of as many issues with the next build as I can, so I’ve released a beta version in the forums.

The builds available there significantly enhance the existing builds of VirtueDesktops, and fix more bugs than I care to note. If you have issues with any of the previously released versions, you should give the beta a go.

You can download the build from the forums, but be sure to read the release notes before installing. With these builds, you have the option of discussing problems in the forum thread, or filing issues via VirtueTrac, however I’ve been receiving reports that people (including myself) cannot access Trac. Apparently it’s just a DNS issue (we switched servers about a month ago), but it’s taking a long time to right itself.

Thanks for your patience this year - I’m hoping this new build will become the basis for a stable release before christmas!

VirtueDesktops 0.53r241

23 11 2006

What’s changed?

  • Some of the application desktop binding should work again. It’s not all there, but some calls to the CGS* stuff I changed for Leopard broke under Tiger - these have been reverted.
  • Fixed a crash with the Colour Label Button on the desktop inspector.
  • Modified the behaviour of the procmod authentication dialog.
  • Other minor fixes.

Known issues

  • Application desktop binding is only partially working in this build. If this is important to you, stay with a build lower than r220.
  • A lot has changed in the Desktop Inspector’s controller and nib, so make sure you report any issues via VirtueTrac.
  • The ALS code is very young. Use with caution. In the next couple of releases, I’ll be disabling and hiding hardware functionality if it isn’t present on the current machine.
  • The sensitivity slide from ALS is set to 1% by default. It needs to be set to around 25%.
  • I’ve started documentation and help files for VirtueDesktops, but they are not included in this release
  • Please use VirtueTrac to search for any issues you may be having, and to report any new problems.

What’s changed?

  • Updated behaviour of the broken dock extension window. Users can now choose to ignore the error rather than forcing a quit.
  • Mouse triggers will now work properly after screen resolution changes.
  • Endless permissions loop should not occur anymore. Users can choose to “Ignore” that their copy of VirtueDesktops is not functioning properly and continue to use the application. Allowing the application to modify it’s own permissions, or adding your account to the procmod group will stop this.
  • VirtueDesktops will run under the WWDC preview of Leopard.
  • Fixed a crashing bug in the desktop inspector.
  • Removed debug messages which were going to the console.

Known issues

  • Application desktop binding does not work in this build. If this is an important feature to you, please stay with an earlier build!
